5 out of 5 stars The HTC Desire is amazing   September 4, 2010
R. Hayward (London UK)
I'd been using a K-JAM and a Sony phone for some time, but neither did it all. Then the HTC Desire came along....
If you're hesitating about buying one then don't - you won't be sorry! It's everything you could want. Small enough for a pocket, but a great screen. Thin and light. The best thing I've found so far is that it just works. Two days after I bought it I received the update for Android 2.2 (with Flash 10.1) and it installed effortlessly with no glitches. Now even iPlayer is available to me. The list of what this phone can do seems endless. Buy one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent phone, though some minor missed opportunities   August 26, 2010

This is a fantastic phone, the built in apps are great and there some amazing apps in the store.
Android is a great system and I've written my own apps.

There are a lot of comments about battery life. My own experience is that it is pretty good, but it does depend on what you do. Hitting the processor hard has a significant impact, so badly heaved apps may explain why some people are having problems and why their phone gets warm. I get about a day of very heavy use, about 2 days of reasonable use and 4 days of light use.

Now the missed opportunities. None of these are that serious, but I'm surprised that someone like HTC, who are normally very good, missed these:

o You need to press the power button to wake the screen, but if the phone is off, it now switches on. A long press of the power button to switch on would have solved this.
o An ear-piecing start-up sound. Why do we need a start-up sound at all? Can be fixed with an app.
o Notification LED stops flashing after 5 minutes, so can't spot waiting messages etc. at a glance. Can be fixed with an app.
o The Orange voice-mail notification system confuses the SMS manager and it puts a message on the SIM. Can be fixed with an app.
o Hands-free Bluetooth dialing would be nice.

But don't get me wrong, I still love it.
I can use the VPN to connect to my home machine.
I can connect a laptop via USB or WiFi and use tethering.
The browser is very good and can now handle flash.
Navigation using Google maps is very good, I don't need a separate Sat Nav any more.
On screen keyboard works well, no problem creating text messages and writing emails.
Great for watching videos (amazing screen) and listening to music.
Has an FM radio, but does need a fairly strong signal.
etc.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun   August 26, 2010
Mr. Stewart Morgan (Great Britain)
For many years I have been on PAYG, but after seeeing a demo of this I had to get it. It has loads of free fun apps, which I have to say I have had hours of fun playing with. It covers all my needs but the only downside is that the battery needs charging, you will only get about 3/4 of the day on a full charge if you play with the apps, otherwise as a phone it will last all day, but thats just too boring.

5 out of 5 stars Best Phone ever...   August 25, 2010

I have been waiting a long time for a phone like this. I wanted a phone like the iPhone but not be tied into any long expensive contracts, plus I hate iTunes. So I bought an unlocked Desire.
Couple reasons for buying this
* Also I read up about the upcoming MiFi hotspot feature which was arriving in Andriod 2.2 and though this would be ideal for using with my laptop or for my girlfriend's iPad. Being one of the flagship handsets I knew there was a good chance of the update coming.
* The cloud based contact storage. I have always had problems with keeping a backup of my contacts and switching with new phones. Update Google contacts and it wirelessly updates the phone and vice versa. I know if I changed phones and it had Andriod, then all the contact information would sync with no problems.

It's a fast phone and a great size. You can use a standard mini-usb cable to charge the phone, no special cables needed.
