5 out of 5 stars HTC Desire   September 9, 2010
Lb63 (Stockholm)
After having to wait for 4 weeks in Sweden I decided to purchase from Amazon (my 1st time) and was happily surprised, everything went to expectation and more as delivery of the Desire was before the expected date.

The HTC Desire is pure pleasure, from the outer looks, to the feel in your hand to the speed of operation it has all been a fun and wonderful experience.
I have spent many hours downloading from the Android market, testing playing and exploring.
As with most (if not all) smart phones the battery life is limited but i am sure it will last the whole day once the novelty has worn off a bit and i dont have it in my hand and active all day.

As soon as I connected to 3G I was notified of the availability of Android V2.2 (froyo). Installed with no problems at all.

There is a side that is a disappointment.
The activesync to an Exchange server has its challenges. I was not able to sync an appointment created in Outlook to the device, the reverse works fine.
I have downloaded Touchdown and it works fine but it is sad that the HTC Integrated solution doesnt work. Another problem with the HTC / Outlook workings is that you cant set a zero minute reminder on a calendar entry and also cant snooze a calendar alarm for a specific period, you either dismiss the reminder or snooze it for a preset time.

I know it doesnt concern this review but I was disappointed in HTC, the availability of the HTC Desire in Sweden was delayed over and over as I mentioned at the start of this review. It seems like HTC just kept changing the delivery date (4 times) and the shops selling it were powerless.
My question is why is this acceptable that a big corporation can just make promises and keep changing them.
Bad on you HTC, might be small to you now but if it keep happening then someday it will come back to you, the wheel always, always turns.
Appart from having stock available and empty promises round that the HTC Desire is an awesome smartphone.

3 out of 5 stars Overly complicated, poor battery life   September 8, 2010
Matt

After two months with this phone, I have to admit, it's not all it's cracked up to be - and neither is the Android mobile operating system.

Initially, I really enjoyed the experience, but then minor niggles started to set in.

It's a phone, first and foremost, yet the only way to actually access the phone part of the device, is from the home screen.
As soon as you navigate to any other screens, you have to return to the home screen to access the phone functionality.

Media volume is linked to ring tone volume - in other words, if you want to turn down the volume of music or video, it turns down the volume of the incoming call.

The amount of click throughs and finger swipes to get to particular functions gets annoying.

The battery life is appalling, no matter how much you try to save it by switching off wifi, or bluetooth - it needs a recharge every 10 hours.
That's a massive negative for any phone device.

The phone gets very warm quickly when doing CPU intensive tasks.
It also isn't that comfortable to hold. I haven't dropped it yet, but I'm surprised I haven't - it thin and slippery in the hand.

The camera is decent enough for a smart phone - a bit washed out in terms of colour and a bit slow, but workable.

The touch screen works well, but isn't even close to the quality and responsiveness of apple products - if you have big fingers, you'll have all sorts of issues with it.
The keyboard keys are tiny and switching between different modes gets tiresome quickly - finger errors are far more prone than on an iphone.

The fact that you can multitask ends up becoming a problem - applications don't close automatically, resulting in CPU drain and phone slowdowns. This is what Apple tried to avoid by not enabling multitasking - I've yet to see how the latest Apple OS handles the multitasking functionality since it's been added.

It's arguable how useful multitasking is in all but the most simple of tasks. I can understand wanting to copy text from a browser to a notepad, but do you really need to have multiple applications open on such a small device? No.

Overall, the interface isn't very intuitive.

It's a reasonable phone, but if your stuck between choosing this or an iPhone, your choice is simple - iPhone.

This review is from someone who is very technically adept, loves new devices and operating systems, is completely platform agnostic, and uses windows, mac & linux on a daily basis.
The 'geek' in me was drawn to this device due to the open aspect of Android over iPhone.
The reality is, the device suffers as a result of that openness.
It's not as intuitive, as polished, as enjoyable nor as powerful as an iPhone.

5 out of 5 stars Great Handset, but...   September 8, 2010
Karl Proctor (Swansea, Wales)
Not wanting to be a sheep and get another iPhone to replace my 3 year old 2G iphone, I decided to buy a Desire. I wanted a phone which allowed me to do many of the things that I can do with my iphone, but I also wanted the ability to tether (use my mobile phone as a modem) my new phone to my PC for internet (I dont have internet at home). Though the desire can't be tethered to a Mac, if you have the 2.2 release of Android, you can use the handset as an access point (similar to a wireless router at home) and share the internet connection from your mobile. For this reason, I bought the desire...

Pro's
-Very fast
-Good size - approx same size as iPhone
-Big, bright screen (screen is about 2mm bigger than iPhone)
-Looks great

cons;
-Shockingly bad battery life (I got about 6-8 hours) - BUT - once conditioned (after a 4-6 weeks) you can apparently get about 1.5-2 days - or buy a second battery (around £15) - this is the one I ordered
-Screen is difficult to see in strong sunlight
-There are fewer 'official' apps - eg an Amazon app made by amazon, a Trainline app made by trainline - but this is likely to change over the next 12 months or so
-The android market (same as app store) seems to show apps from all countries with prices in Pounds, Euro's & Dollars

Now for the BUT part of my review...
After less than 20 minutes of powering on, my handset crashed. I didn't think much about it, until it crashed again...and again...and again...in all, the handset crashed in excess of 20 times!! Most of the crashes were a crash 'loop' where the handset would crash, reboot to the lock screen and then crash straight away and continue to do this until I removed the battery. Since saturday (it is now wednesday) the handset has crashed over 50 times, which is why I am returning it. It is too unstable to be used and so I will go back to my 3 year old iPhone!

So why the 5* review? It is a fantastic handset which does everything that I need it to do, but I think that I was unlucky to have a bad device. I have asked for a replacement from amazon, but at the time of writing this review, there are none available, so I have to have a refund and wait for new stock...BUT, despite the problems, I *will* be buying another Desire...hence the 5* review...I think it is important to put the good and the bad in reviews, and I had a lot of bad with this device, but it hasn't put me off it...

A little praise for Amazon here, they were really helpful with this and offered me a refund straight away, no questions, no arguments, no problems...

I hope this review helps your decisions...

-Karl

5 out of 5 stars The HTC Desire is amazing   September 4, 2010
R. Hayward (London UK)
I'd been using a K-JAM and a Sony phone for some time, but neither did it all. Then the HTC Desire came along....
If you're hesitating about buying one then don't - you won't be sorry! It's everything you could want. Small enough for a pocket, but a great screen. Thin and light. The best thing I've found so far is that it just works. Two days after I bought it I received the update for Android 2.2 (with Flash 10.1) and it installed effortlessly with no glitches. Now even iPlayer is available to me. The list of what this phone can do seems endless. Buy one.
