Nice pocket HD camcorder, ready to take on Flip. March 18, 2010 Bearcat (Ohio) When I first opened the box I was pretty surprised just how slim and light this camcorder is....it was definitely more svelte than the Flip I had owned previously. I charged it up and started to record. At all levels of recording quality I think almost anyone would be satisfied. Images were crisp and clear and I felt the audio was fine for such a small camcorder. Once you record some video you just pop out the USB and plug it into your computer. No complicated software to install, the interface just pops up. While the software interface didn't have any real advanced features it is more than adequate for what most people would be doing. You can even take a still image from your video. You can upload to YouTube or Facebook easy as can be.
I figured there would be many people who would be traveling with this as an emergency camcorder and so I gave it to my wife on her recent business trip from Ohio to Norway. I wish this had come with a case but I used an old Oakley soft pouch for sunglasses and it was fine in that. The Vado made the trip easily as it is so small my wife was able to throw it in her purse and not even realize it was there because it was so small and light. While in Norway she took two videos. One was outside in a windy environment and I was very impressed with the video quality and how well the audio picked up her talking about the surroundings. Very impressed.
A couple issues I have. For this price it should come with a case. Also, for this price it should either come with more memory or have an SD/Mini-SD slot so you can add memory to it. I think the sweet spot in it's current package would be $149...just my opinion. Keep in mind that this little camcorder will NOT take the place of a full fledged HD camcorder and the software does not match the levels of stand along video editing software but for this price that is expected. But for kids or someone who travels and needs something small this is great. This is just as good as the Flip video's if not a tiny bit better on the video quality. Overall recommended.
Unintuitive, lousy buttons and so-so picture quality March 18, 2010 Brian Morris (Pittsburgh, PA) I am an expert what it comes to gadgets and technology. I have had many digital cameras, camcorders, camera phones and so much more over the years. This is the most unintuitive and hard to use device I can remember.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Upon opening the cheap feeling packaging, I found the camera to have a cheap look and feel, but maybe that's after being used to iPod Touches and iPhones. Looking on the device, it has a screw hole for a tripod, a headphone jack, a power button, a video/photo button, trash button, mini-HDMI port and a nicely designed fold-up USB "cord." On the front is a record button and plus, minus, fast forward, reverse and play/pause places to touch.
USABILITY
Turning it on, I found the letters and graphics to be very cheesy, like an 8 year old digital camera. Taking a video was straightforward. Figuring out how to watch it took some fiddling, since I'm used to a record/play switch or button on digital cameras. On this you hit the play/pause button, which automatically plays the video you just took.
The + and - and fast-forward and reverse buttons and play/pause are just "touch" areas with no feel whatsoever. I find these to be just awful. You are almost going to need to be looking to use them.
Next I wanted to set the time and date and maybe some preferences. I couldn't figure out how to do it. A menu button would be customary in these devices, but there was none to be found.. I finally figured out that you hold down the video/camera button for 2 seconds. You almost need to attach a quick reference guide to the camera to know how to use it...
VIDEO QUALITY
I did a few tests and found the video quality, on HD mode, to be ok, but nothing worth getting excited about. After all, the lens can be measured in millimeters. On the computer with the video file and HDTV via HDMI, it was not as crisp and clear as larger HD camcorders, but it would be perfectly acceptable as a YouTube video. It may have HD resolution, but I doesn't qualify in my mind as an HD-quality picture (which has more than a technical meaning).
In comparison with the iPhone 3GS, the video was of higher quality with the Vado, and I didn't notice a huge difference in how it handled low lighting.
EASE OF TRANSFERRING
This is a high point of this device. The built-in USB "cord" is genius and hopefully will be adopted by more devices. It has a program that can be installed, but Windows can just get the videos directly, which is great. If only all devices made it so easy.
Overall, the so-so video quality and awful usability will make my camera go back it the box.
I think this category of digital video recorders cannot withstand the onslaught of phones that will be able to do the same thing without carrying extra devices.
A downgrade from earlier versions. March 16, 2010 Craig A. Schwab (Atlanta, GA USA) I owned the first generation of this camera, so when the lcd broke on the other one after an accident, I was pretty confident that I would love this one as well. Not so.
The worst problem is the addition of the touch sensitive controls. It's very easy to accidentally push any of the buttons. I'd read about this in reviews before I got the camera, but it ended up being way worse of a problem than I expected. The only actual button on the back of the camera is the record button, and it must be way too easy to press as well, because in the short time that I owned it I recorded well over 3 hours of footage from my pocket. This even after I turned it off and disabled the quick record option. Call me old fashioned, but I think you should be able to put a "pocket camera" in your pocket. Also, I never had this problem with the first generation. Let me also say that I was really disappointed that they cut the amount memory in half from the first generation of this camera, and still without adding the option for a micro-sd slot to add anymore memory. Lastly, it may be a bit superficial, but they changed the wonderful mat finish of the first generation to a glossy finish on this one, and it's covered in fingerprints after only a couple minutes use. Plus, the new design on the front of the camera is just plain ugly.
On the plus side, the video quality is pretty good for the price range and given that it's a pocket camera. It definitely captured the colors well and in stunning resolution (though I would love to see them add options for 60fps and better image stabilization). The sound quality is about what you would expect (not so bad), but I love the addition of a microphone jack (for using an external mic instead of the built-in) and I wish I could've tried this out! Also, they added the option to choose your exposure level with this generation, which made me very happy, because the first generation definitely needed it, and so this camera works much better in lower light. Not great, mind you, but better. The added option to to take pictures instead of video was also a nice surprise, and the pictures came out pretty well as long as you could hold the camera relatively still and choose the correct exposure amount.
Overall, I was very unhappy with this camera. Mine ended up having some sort of issue, so luckily I was able to send it back and get a full refund; I would not have been happy had I been stuck with this one. I was happy with the video quality, and some of the new options were a step in the right direction, but creative definitely took a number of missteps with this camera that make it almost unusable. The biggest drawbacks of this camera were definitely the addition of touch sensitive buttons and the cameras tendency to record while in your pocket. Creative has definitely fallen behind the pocket camera market, and I do hope they step it up and come out with a camera that can compete a little better. At this point, I'm probably going to be getting the Kodak Zi8 instead.
Better than the Flip Ultra HD March 11, 2010 Giving Back (Denver, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I originally bought the Flip Ultra HD from Newegg. I had all kinds of issues with the Flip Easy Share Software. Flip acknowledged the issue, but couldn't provide a solution. So I went to return it to Newegg and was informed that wasn't an item eligible for a return. Lame! They did make a 'one time exception' after I explained the problem. But lesson learned, I doubt I'll purchase anything over $20 from Newegg in the future.
Anyway this Vado is significantly smaller than the Flip Ultra HD, and the lense is better due to the wider angle it can shoot. With the Flip Ultra HD I always felt like I had to take a few steps back to whatever I was trying to record to fit into the picture. The sound quality also seems better with the Vado.
On the downside, the buttons on the Vado are poorly designed. They can get activated by barely touching them or brushing against them. It's also advertised as being able to take still photos....yes it does, but the quality is poor, there's no anti shake technology, so mine are all blurry. It would probably work if I had a tripod..but I don't.
It's a fun camera for the price point.
It's so little March 9, 2010 Michael D. Briggs (El Reno, OK United States) That's the first thing I noticed, it's the size of an iPhone and yet it's an HD video camera and a digital camera. Now if you are filming an epic movie, this is not the device for you. But if you are out walking and see bigfoot or an UFO, this camera is just the right size to have in your pocket to film them. (Be sure to keep the just out of frame and bounce around a lot)
There are several very nice features, the built in USB is great so you can connect quickly to any computer. The software is built in to install quickly and it allows you upload straight to YOUtube or other sites easily.
Now it does have couple negatives, no external memory slot for SDcards and only 4GB of memory. The Focus and Light Adjustment features are a little sensitive, but that just requires a little practice to use them. And I have to say that sometimes it is just too small when you are trying to film something elaborate.
Overall this is a very nice product that you can have on hand for those times you wish you had a video camera, as well as those times that a more elaborate system would be intrusive.
