Great information on the Alpha 100 and photography in general December 13, 2008 S. Bormann (Poenix, AZ USA) This book was all that I expected and then some. The structure of the book is very helpful. There is a Quick Tour of using the camera, then detailed discussion of the camera features and how they are used. This section seems to cover in an easy to read format every feature and control of the camera. The bonus was Part II of the book, which includes information on many areas of photography such as composition, animal, architectural, abstract, flower and many other areas of photography. Even how to use the camera for infrared photography is covered. These sections all related to the specific topic and how the Alpha 100 can be used to accomplish the specific type of photography. A very useful book to learn about this specific camera plus a great deal on photography in general all in a easy to read book.
An excellent beginner/intermediate book October 28, 2008 Sasikanth Malladi (Fairfax, VA, USA) Since you're reading this review, I'm guessing that you bought the Sony A100. Also since you bought the entry level A100, I'll also guess that you're a beginner to DSLR photography.
This is a great book to start off with. The manual that comes with the camera is just that. It simply explains the what of all the settings but not how or why.
Photography is a fine art (and a science) and to take good pictures is not a matter of accident. Toward this end, the A100 has lots of features which let you fine tune the way the picture is captured. Depending on where you're taking the picture, you might need to manually correct the white balance, increase aperture, set the color saturation and contrast, just to name a few. Or else the picture won't make it into the next issue of National Geographic! But how and, more importantly, why?
This is where this book steps in. It first explains all the menus and buttons on the camera, and next, very importantly, tells you how changing each option will affect the picture. And everything is explained with full color photos.
The explanation is excellent about how each option affects photos, like white balance, dynamic range optimization, ISO speed etc.
Once you've digested this, you can then proceed to understand how to set these in the A100 to get the feel that you want to.
An SLR is only as good as the lens, and there is an entire chapter devoted to the types of lens available and which is best suited to each situation.
Since you're capturing light, there's a chapter on light essentials, shadows, kinds of lighting etc.
And the best part: there is a big chapter of exercises suggested in typical photography: portraits, landscapes, sunset/sunrise, evening, night photography. This really helps you in practicing what has been preached (to you).
All in all, since you're a beginner to DSLR and have Sony A100, this is an excellent buy.
Good luck in you adventures in photography!
Great book! October 15, 2008 D. Malewski 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book has been a lifesaver for me! It's written very clearly, and I've found it very helpful for my Sony Alpha camera.
For novices only; essentially just a glorified Sony manual October 6, 2008 Jesse Courtemanche (Virginia) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Long story short - this was a waste for me. Definitely for entry-level DSLR photographers ONLY. Essentially a glorified Sony manual.
Good book for a great product August 13, 2008 Donald Hawley (usa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a great help in showing all the features of the A100. I just wish Sony had such a book with their cameras. I would tell everyone who buys this camera to get the book. I just hope they come up with books for the new Sony products.
