Don't believe the hype: though some critics and viewers decried the sophomore season of the hit fantasy series Heroes, the core of the program remained as strong as in its debut network run. To be sure, the 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike hobbled the show, and producers stumbled by stranding two of its most intriguing characters: Super-charged Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia) is taken out of the action after being struck with amnesia, while Hiro (Masi Oka) is sent to feudal Japan, where he encounters his own idol, Takezo Kenzei (David Anders). Both are overcomplicated story arcs, even by Heroes standards, and their connection to the rest of the season occasionally requires some mental gymnastics. But the crux of the season--the Company's development of the power-draining Shanti virus and its potentially devastating effects on both average citizens and superhumans like Niki Sanders (Ali Larter), The Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis) and primary villain Sylar (Zachary Quinto)--is solid, gripping material. The introduction of new characters like the lethal Maya (Dania Ramirez) and Kristen Bell as the electrically charged (in both the literal and figurative sense) Elle Bishop also up the dramatic stakes, even if their presence may require a scorecard for some viewers. In short, the few kinks in the armor of Heroes: Season 2 ultimately don't detract from the show's drive and vision. Season two spreads its supplemental features across all four of its discs; chief among these are commentary tracks by the cast and crew on all eleven episodes. The participating talent ranges from creator Tim Kring and stars Ventimiglia, Oka, Quinto and Greg Grunberg to composers Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin, which helps to provide a wide variety of information about almost every aspect of the show's production. Featurettes cover everything from the history of Takezo Kenzei to in-depth looks at scenes from the season, while "Untold Stories" explores storylines that were left unfinished due to the writers' strike. The key extras are, of course, the alternate ending to the season finale (which is unfortunately revealed by the rear cover-art text) and an info-heavy sneak peek at Season 3. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Awesome   January 8, 2009
One of the best shows I have ever seen next to the Buffy series. The second season was not better than the first but still a great watch. Hiro is my favorite besides Sylar and Peter is just awesome. Great supernatural show.

5 out of 5 stars Heros -eason2   January 7, 2009
Very enjoyable, even though Season 2 was a short season due to the strike. We're now into Season 3 and hooked on Heros.

2 out of 5 stars A nightmare to be forgotten   January 6, 2009

If you loved Season 1 and were addicted to how brilliant it was, you may be compelled to think about Season 2 and Season 3 DVD sets as an essential purchase. But don't be fooled. Be informed that that the sophomore seasons of Heroes have a noticeable drop in:
- writing quality
- directing
- acting from certain members of the cast (ahem-Hayden Panettiere-ahem).

Overall, it was a bad year for Heroes. The DVD-treatment itself is excellent: audio and video quality rarely gets better than this. The problem is that with episodes this bad, boring and ridden with plot-holes, you won't want ever to rewatch them or even access the special features.

In retrospect, I think watching Season 2 and 3 is not necessary to understand what will happen next. I am not sure whether this fact is a compliment or a criticism of Heroes. Save yourself the $$$ and just wait out this year and watch Season 4. Forget Season 2 and 3 like you forget a bad nightmare.

5 out of 5 stars Great charachter development   January 6, 2009

I am on the edge of my seat for every episode of heroes for the thorough charachter development that drives every action and conflict. Very well done show.

4 out of 5 stars More characterization, though plots had to be trunkated   January 2, 2009
The writer's strike wrecked havoc upon Season 2, but not was all lost. There are many characters and some plots worked well others dragged. The Hiro in Japan storyline was a superficial story full of cliches. Too bad because the villian, Adam, was one of the better characters and played by a great actor. Another great addition was the character of Elle, a sociopath only kept in check by the her duties as a Company agent. It turns out that her previous relationship with Sylar was supposed to have been built upon at a slower pace, but the strike eliminated that storyline. The 3rd season only had the actrees for a few episodes and her story was resolved too quickly. Too bad because the Sylar/Elle story was one of the highlights of an inconsistent season 3. She did bring a spark to season 2 though and her scenes with Peter, Mohinder, Claire, and HRG were some of the better ones of the season. Sylar without powers proved that he could use deception and manipulation to get what he wanted. Too bad the character Maya was given an annoying personality and had me rooting against her. Sylar needs a strong personality to play off of so he doesn't completely dominate the scenes. We did learn his personal power comes from his will power, focus, and intelligence, not just his outward non-human powers.
There was great potential for the New Orleans family but I found the plot very weak. The young actors though were terrific and did what they could to keep it moving. I would have liked to see more of Nikki after the death of her husband though. She ended up a victim instead of the complicated strong woman she was in Season 1.
The extras are crucial to understanding what changed due to the strike. For all its faults, Heroes is still an entertaining show, although wildly inconsistent.
